Online, Trail of Bits reported on a GPU security vulnerability. The researchers claim that devices with AMD or Qualcomm CPUs, as well as millions of Apple MacBooks and iPhones, are impacted.
The problem, which goes by the creative name LeftoverLocals, is with GPU RAM used to store AI data instead of the SoC. Due to this vulnerability, hackers can readily access personal data stored in the GPU’s local memory.
Apple acknowledged that it is aware of the issue and has already patched some devices that use the M3 or A17 Bionic chip; however, earlier iPads, MacBook Air models with the M2 chip, and iPhone 12 Pro models remain vulnerable.
Devices with GPUs from the company, Apple, AMD, and Imagination include the attack. Intel, Arm, and Nvidia are unaffected.
Over time, graphics units must do more jobs and become more complicated, which results in longer and exposed code. Hackers may access uninitialized local memory, which ranges in size from 5 MB to 180 MB, with less than 10 lines of code.
In this manner, data left on the victim’s device by the user can be accessed by attackers, including large language models (LLMs), which are mostly utilised by ChatGPT and other generative AI applications.
All companies with defective products confirmed to the problem with Trails of Bits. As soon as they worked out how to repair the GPU, they said they will provide an update. To protect yourself, we advise you to monitor your device and update it as soon as the fix is available.
