All passengers on a Brazilian plane that spins, nosedives, and crashes in Vinhedo are dead.
All 62 persons on board a regional turboprop jet heading out of Sao Paulo, Brazil, perished in the accident on Friday, according to local officials not far from the scene.
Social media footage appeared to show the ATR-built aircraft spinning out of control as it crashed behind a stand of trees close to homes, trailed by a thick cloud of black smoke.
There were no survivors and only one damaged property in the nearby condominium complex, according to city officials in Valinhos, near Vinhedo, and no occupants were injured.
Shortly after the disaster, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared, “I have to be the bearer of really bad news,” during an occasion. He requested a moment of silence in honour of the crash victims.
The aircraft, according to airline Voepass, crashed near the town of Vinhedo, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo. The jet had taken off from Cascavel, in the state of Parana, headed for the city’s main international airport.
The aircraft, registered PS-VPB, crashed, and the unlisted airline stated it was unable to offer more details.
Sao Paulo’s state fire service announced it was sending seven firefighters to the crash location shortly after the apparent mishap.
FlightRadar24, a flight tracker, identified the aircraft as an ATR 72-500 turboprop. Airbus and the Italian aerospace company Leonardo jointly own ATR.
